I think we’ve made it clear by now that New Year’s Resolutions are not really our thing here in Nocturnal Mind. In fact, personally, I’ve always kind of disliked the concept. For starters, it often puts a lot of pressure on people to suddenly turn their lives around and become something completely different from who they are. Maybe vows to exercise more or eat better are easier to grasp over the course of a year, but there are many things people frequently seem tempted to promise (either themselves or others) that can take extreme amounts of time and effort to achieve. Sometimes, it may even take the entire course of their lives. And I’ve just found that when I make a solid resolution to accomplish a particular thing, I am far more discouraged when I fail than encouraged when I succeed. It’s just who I am as a person.
So, I’ve learned to adapt. I no longer set “goals,” per se, for each year: instead, I try to focus on setting “guidlines,” and “lesson plans…” Things that are little steps on their own, instead of one big something that little steps may lead up to. For instance, I’m not going to become fluent in Spanish in 2023–that is something I know I cannot promise. But before I turn on the TV each evening, I am going to open my Duolingo app for a lesson or two. And while I’m certainly not going to reach Lara Croft-ian levels of fitness by December, I am going to put more focus on exercise this year.
And as far as Nocturnal Mind goes, I am not going to promise that we won’t get burnt out in 2023. But, we are going to keep doing what we’re doing, as much as we’re willing and able. And while I do think we have exciting things in store further down the line this year, we will simply bring that news to you as it unfolds.
Here’s to a new year, and to new possibilities. What do you have in store for your 2023?
Love,
The Night Crew

Hooray for you!! This sounds wonderful and achievable and I totally agree. It’s better to be happy and content with yourself rather than be pressured to “perform” or overachieve. Enjoy each day.
