I’m just going to put this here. Just to give you a general idea of the direction my week has taken.
Though, to be fair to my writing and to my characters, this is actually an amazing thing to happen. In fact, it’s something that I wish would happen more often when I’m in the middle of a story. I’m not entirely sure what triggers moments like these, but I normally take it as a good sign when my characters start telling me what they’re going to say and do instead of standing around, awaiting my instructions. All in all, it’s pretty much the book writing itself at this point. And I can’t get enough of it.
For example, just the other day I had a specific scene laid out. I knew how I wanted the characters to enter the scene, I knew how I wanted the characters to interact in the scene, and I knew how I wanted them to exit the scene.
And then, somewhere in the middle, they flipped the script on me entirely.
Now, instead of a (probably) boring conversation about what so-and-so did earlier that day, my characters are having a moment: a genuine moment that further solidifies their relationship and draws them closer than ever before—and even sets me up to send one of them into an existential crisis.
Mwah ha ha ha ha!
Anyway.
A part of this goes back to that feeling of working magic through our creativity: to bring characters to life that are so real, so convincing even to the writer herself, that they end up making their own decisions about what they want to do and who they’re going to be as the writing goes on.
*Wiping away a tear* It’s moments like these that make me proud to be a story mama.
Night Owls, tell me about a moment when your own art / WIP inspired you! How cool was that?
